National Health Run

The National Health Run (NHR) is an annual event organized by Sri Lanka Anti Narcotics Association (SLANA) with the collaboration of several Government and Non Government institutions, under the auspices of Police Narcotic Bureau and with the technical support of Sri Lanka Sports Authorities.

The National Health Run is one of the biggest sporting events in Sri Lanka which has been running for the past 18 years, that brings together clubs and individuals from all over the island to compete in running. This festive was held on the 6th of June in 2010 in parallel to commemorate United Nations Declaration against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and under the theme of �Refresh Sri Lanka�. ; Hence Galle Face Green was the games center of the event though the running events took place on the roads of Colombo City. The event ambassadors were the Sri Lankan superstar Mr Mahela Jayawardene and Indian film icon Mr Vivek Oberoi. Further it was endorsed by IIFA, Sri Lanka Police Narcotics Bureau and the technical support was provided by the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA).

Foreign tourists from all over the world, Sports Fans, Families, Children from all over the island, Social development, Anti Narcotics and HIV/AIDS serving organizations, Government and Non Government institutions were called upon to utilize and take advantage of a conducive environment created by sport on the festive day. The whole essence was to promote integration, interaction and bringing people together and healthy life through sports.

The inaugural of the first edition of the National Health Run (NHR) was in year 1991 respectively at the same venue, Galle Face Green. Therefore, it has been running for 13 events up to 2004 and significantly in all cases it has been a success with a main thrust to bring more competitive events in Sri Lanka. Over 2000 runners were participating in different sporting disciplines with an average estimate of over 5000 spectators on each year. In every year NHR was supported by a selected event ambassador and most delighted participation was held in 1995 by Famous Bollywood actress Aishwaraya Rai.
